Mountain GorillasMountain Gorillas and humans share more than 97% of their genetic material. It’s only in Africa where one can find the endangered species of the Gorillas. There are two species of gorillas and these are: western lowland gorilla (scientific name Gorilla gorilla) and eastern lowland gorilla (scientific name Gorillas Beringei).  Mountain gorilla is a subspecies of eastern lowland gorilla and are only found in three countries in the whole world which is; Uganda, Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Virunga Massif is said to have several endangered mountain gorillas that boarders Democratic republic of Congo in the eastern side, The republic of Rwanda in the northern side and in Uganda in the southern part, the virunga massif comprises of volcanoes national park with an area of 163kmThe Mikeno sector of the southern part of Virunga National Park DRC; 254 km2 and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park Uganda; 38 km2.

How many mountain gorillas
There are about 880 mountain gorillas left in the world and Bwindi Impenetrable forest National Park is said to be habituating 400 mountain gorillas and the rest of the number 480 is shared by the virunga massif that is  Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda,  Virunga national park in DR Congo and Mgahinga national park in Uganda.

Uganda has currently 12 habituated Gorilla groups that can be tracked by tourists.
These are: Mubare, Habinyanja Nkuringo, Bitukura, Rushegura, Nshongi, Oruzogo, Kahunje and Mishaya, Busingye , Bweza, Bikingi, Bushaho. There is also Nyakagezi in Mgahinga National Park that is also available for tracking though previously it would cross borders to the virunga ranges outside Uganda which would make it impossible to go tracking, this group would cross and spend much time in Rwanda but of current it has settled in Uganda and its easy to track.
Rwanda Gorilla Families.
Rwanda also has 10 habituated Gorilla families and these are: Susa A, Karisimbi, Isabukuru, Ntambara, Sabinyo, Agashya, Amahoro, Umubano, Hirwa, Kwitonda, Ugenda, and Bwenge group.
A gorilla permit in Uganda costs USD 600 into the pick season of June, July, August September, October  however prices go low and the are discounted in the low season that is in the months of November, April, May, .and in Rwanda it costs USD 750. It’s very important to book your Gorilla Permit at least 4 months in advance since they are served on first come first serve basis.
