Mountain Rwenzori is also commonly known as the great “Mountains of the Moon”. It is the 3rd highest Mountain in Africa and the highest in Uganda. The first foreigner to climb this Mountain was an Italian named Luigi Amadeodi Savoy duke of the Abruzzi and this happened hundred years back in 1906. The Rwenzori Mountain is the highest mountain range in the whole of Africa, with 6 glacial peaks namely Mount Speke, Mount Stanley, Mount Gessi, Mount Emin Pasha, Mount Luigi da Savoia as well as Mount Baker. The highest peak is Margherita (5.109m) and the second highest is Alexandra (5.083m) both found on Mt. Stanley. These can be compared to those of Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya.
The central circuit hike on Mountain Rwenzori takes six nights or seven days and reaches an altitude of 14,000ft (4,267m) above the sea level. The access to the Margherita peak can be done in only 9 days and 8 nights.
The Vegetation on the mountain is according to the altitude. In this way: there is the forest zone (between 1.800 and 2.500 m), the bamboo forest (up to 3000 m), the heather and Alpine zones (3000-4.500 m), with forests of giants heather plants, giant lobelias and groundsels.
