Mt. Elgon National Park is found on Mt. Elgon which is an extinct volcano that first erupted more than 24 million years ago. It is the Volcano with the largest surface area of any extinct volcano in the world (50 km by 80 km) and a caldera with a diameter of almost 8 km. The highest peak on the Mountain is Wagagai at 4.321 m and can be accessed in only 5 days depending on which trail one uses (Ssasa Trail, Sipi Trail or others).
The Park lies at the boundary line with Kenya in Eastern Uganda. Locally, it was called Mount Masaba by the Bagishu tribe and for them they believed that their believer Masaba came from this Mountain. The word Elgon was brought after the Anglicisation of the Maasai “El Kony”.
The best time to visit Mount Elgon is May and September, November and December. The best tourist activities in the Park are trekking around Mountain Elgon on Ssasa, Piswa or Sipi trails. On you trek you will experience various flora and, the enormous caves, gorges and hot springs.
Hiking also from Sipi trading center to Sipi falls is also yet another activity once can enjoy while visiting Mt. Elgon National Park. There are 4 series of waterfalls which culminates in a 99m drop at an altitude of 1.775 m, along the river Sipi coming from mount Elgon.
